Busta Rhymes new album nearing completion

by Mark 'D' Thomas
Hip Hop Vibe Senior Staff Writer

Busta Rhymes has announced that his new album is near 90% completed, and he's excited to release the final product.

"There's times when you gotta go back in the kitchen and find new seasonings to make the meat taste a little better when you feed the full course meal back to the streets," Busta said. "It was time for me to put together another full course meal that aint never been tasted the way this full course meal is gonna taste."

Although Busta Rhymes refused to divulge his new album's title, he did state that it would follow in the tradition of his previous albums like When Disaster Strikes, The Coming, Extinction Level Event, Anarchy and Genesis.

"This is my shit. I am back in a space where I can talk about the things I love to talk about and touch on things people are a little uncomfortable talking about and really expose the truths, and do it in a way where it's so extremely entertaining. I feel supreme right now."

As Busta's singles are doing quite well on the charts in their own right, there's also a remake of the song "Look at Me Now" that has soared to popularity around the Internet.

The remake of "Look at Me Now" featuring Busta's rapid fire rap, has surpassed over 17,700,000 views on YouTube.com.

Busta plans on capitalizing on the momentum of his recent singles by introducing new artists associated with his new label, Conglomerate Records.

"A couple of my artists are finally going to get their feet wet in the music thing," Busta said, referring to his artists Reek Da Villian and longtime associate, Spliff Starr.

Busta Rhymes' untitled album is due in stores sometime in September.

Dr. Dre ends 50 Cent feud, G-Unit leader joins "Detox"

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

For years, there were rumors of a closet feud between Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. These rumors began when 50 Cent kicked Game out of G-Unit and Dr. Dre soon released him from Aftermath. The story was told over the next few years.

When his album, Curtis, did not fare so well, 50 Cent placed the blame upon Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. 50 Cent began sending several light disses to Dr. Dre. At times, 50 spoke publicly on the feud, but said he would never directly diss Dr. Dre.

This March, 50 Cent revealed Dr. Dre was upset over his headphone line. This is something Dr. Dre denied before calling out an unnamed rival in "I Need a Doctor." Some speculated he was actually going after 50 Cent.

Recent news, however, has proven otherwise. 50 Cent has been invited, by Dr. Dre to record on Detox, the album which will house "I Need a Doctor." No solid release date for the album, or song, has been released to the public.

Busta Rhymes is without a Record Label

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Following his stint at J Records, Busta Rhymes ended up signing with Dr. Dre at Aftermath Entertainment. Despite having his own record label, Busta Rhymes decided to sign a deal with a smaller label. This signing had instant results with his The Big Bang album being a critical success.

However, when Busta Rhymes was ready to release his second album under Aftermath/Interscope, he was met with much resistance. After two years of battling, Busta Rhymes had an altercation with Jimmy Iovine, the chairman of Interscope Records, which led to him being removed from the label.

Busta Rhymes immediately signed with Universal Records and they released his next album. While his singles were met with strong radio play, his album, Back on my B.S. did not sell very well. Initially, Busta Rhymes hoped to release his next album, his final, in the fall of 2009. However, label politics stopped this from happening. Instead, the album was delayed until 2010 and now until 2011.

With half of 2011 already gone, it seems as if Busta Rhymes may not release an album this year, at all. His manager, Chris Lighty, spoke on the situation. Lighty said if fans are waiting for Universal Records to release his album, they will be waiting for a long time. According to his manager, Busta Rhymes is currently without a record label. Still, though, Busta Rhymes' new music is receiving heavy radio rotation.

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

After earning another series of hits from Rebirth, Lil Wayne is not afraid to go outside of his lane. The Young Money rapper recently stepped out of his comfort zone for his latest single. A few days ago, a new Lil Wayne single leaked.

Titled "How to Love," the song featured Lil Wayne singing. Wayne has always tried to harmonize throughout his career. On many of his early songs, Lil Wayne sings his rap verses. Later in his career, he began using auto-tune.

But, on his "How to Love" record, Lil Wayne is actually trying to sing and is not using auto-tune. The reaction from the fans has given another hit to Wayne, the third off the unreleased Carter IV. After the strong reaction, Lil Wayne spoke on the album.

Growing as an artist, Lil Wayne said this is a transitional record he needed to do. Lil Wayne obviously thinks of himself as more than a rapper. Instead, he views himself as an artist and records like "How to Love" help that cause tremendously. Initially, Lil Wayne said Tha Carter IV would be the album everyone wanted, with just rap. But, it seems as if this album will also feature more of his experimental records as well.

By The Hip Hop Writer

Hip hop listeners in Fayetteville, North Carolina were excited when his music caught the attention of Jay-Z. Being discovered by the legendary rapper led to J. Cole becoming the first artist signed to his new label, Roc Nation.

Because the label was an upstart, not many expected a debut album from J. Cole. But, in 2009, hip hop critics and fans were waiting on the first J. Cole album. The wait would prove to be long until a 2010 release date was announced.

Right before the summer, J. Cole released "Who Dat" and a video was filmed. Still, no album came and J. Cole lost all of his buzz until he discussed his album earlier this year. Recently, J. Cole stated the album has a release date and a single.

However, he is waiting on a sample clearance from Kanye West and then he is good to go. J. Cole also announced his collaboration with Jay-Z is complete and it will be featured on his fifteen track debut album.

By The Hip Hop Writer

Three years have passed since Nas last released a solo album. Over the course of these three years, his mind state has definitely changed. In 2008, Nas was determined to name his album Nigger. The album was supposed to address the controversy surrounding the "N-word."

Following his 2008 album, Untitled, Nas partnered with the son of the legendary Bob Marley, Damian Marley, for the Distant Relatives album. Their collaboration effort was met with rave reviews and kept both artists relevant.

Last year, Nas decided to released a sequel to his 2002 album, The Lost Tapes. The Queens rapper first released the album to release some of his unused songs from that period of time. Having recorded so many songs, Nas felt they were too good to go unreleased.

While Nas was ready to release the album, Def Jam did not share his sense of urgency and The Lost Tapes 2 went unreleased. Not focusing on the past, Nas is already recording for his next solo album. For months, he has discussed this album, but he has not given a title. Recently, Nas revealed the title for his album would be Life is Good.

By The Hip Hop Writer

Several rappers in the game have muscular figures. As time has gone on, more and more rappers are showing off their muscular frames. Many of these rappers appeared to be very slim and skinny before racking up these muscles.

Because the rappers have added on so much mass, many have accused them of taking steroids. Nelly is among the rappers on the list of using steroids. Initially, the St. Louis rapper had a very slim build.

However, when he returned to the game in 2008 after a three-year hiatus, he can back much bigger. At the time, a major drug dealer gave cops a list of celebrities he had sold to over the years. When Nelly made the list, he denied all of this.

Now, his former manager, Slim, is bringing these rumors back to the forefront. Slim's accusations have made the "Country Grammar" rapper very unhappy. Nelly said the defense is pointless if the people believe Slim was his manager in the first place. Through Twitter, he also denied intaking anything besides fish, chicken, and several alcoholic beverages before going to to say the foreclosure rumors were also false.

During the 1990s, Eve and Lil' Kim redefined the female's role in the rap game and built a friendship. But, as time went on, the ladies were pulled away from making music. Eve found success in Hollywood, while Lil' Kim had trouble with the law.

By 2010, Nicki Minaj had taken over the rap game and Lil' Kim began dissing her. For months, the feud was one-sided and then Nicki Minaj ignited the feud with her own disses. The two have been trading disses and other female rappers have not been supportive.

Recently, Eve was asked about their feud and she said she would like for Lil' Kim to stop it. Aside from going at Nicki, she has also been trying to create issues with singer, Keyshia Cole. Eve thinks Lil' Kim is investing too much energy in the feud when she should be focusing on new music.

Rick Ross' Maybach Music expansion inspired by Wiz Khalifa

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Following the success of 2010's Teflon Don, Rick Ross felt as if he could do anything. The Miami rapper had risen from being another rapper from the South to being the biggest artist signed to Def Jam. In signing to Def Jam, Ross started his own label, Maybach Music Group.

From the start, Rick Ross had hoped the label would grow into the next big thing in hip hop. In order to make this happen, Ross reached out to Philadelphia rapper, Wiz Khalifa. On the street level, Khalifa had released two albums and was working on a third.

Rick Ross tried to convince him to sign with his Maybach Music. However, this did not happen as Wiz Khalfia signed with the well-established Atlantic Records. Instead of letting this get him down, Rick Ross greatly increased the siz of his label.

Within one month's time, Rick Ross signed Wale, Pill, Teedra Moses, and a host of other artists to Maybach Music. Currently, their music is dominating the radio waves and they just released their Self Made, Vol. 1 compilation album.

Looking back on his success, Rick Ross said it was motivated by Wiz Khalifa opting to sign with Atlantic Records.

By The Hip Hop Writer

Mobb Deep is back with a major way now that Prodigy is a free man. He has been making his rounds and working with several different artists. One of the first statements made, aside from talking G-Unit, was the possibility of Mobb Deep and Nas working together again.

During the 1990s, Mobb Deep and Nas worked so closely, Nas was considered an honorary third member. The duo was so close with Nas, he was brought into their feud with Jay-Z. It was following this when Nas stopped working with Mobb Deep.

In 2005, 50 Cent and Nas began feuding and Mobb Deep joined the feud, signing with G-Unit Records. From this point on, there has been slight beef between Nas and Mobb Deep. However, Nas said they are all past their issues and ready to make music.

A-Thug talks "Thug Love" mixtape and Other New Music

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

It is almost summertime in Harlem and A-Thug is heating things up with his new music. In addition to working on his upcoming album, The Signature, A-Thug is also working on other music to support his upcoming album.

While marketing his other business ventures, A-Thug's primary focus is on the music. A-Thug has been in the studio, nonstop recording new music. Some of the songs are for the album and the others for his upcoming Thug Love mixtape.

Recently, Hip Hop Vibe caught up with A-Thug and he discussed his upcoming work and gave us more news about the BRS.

Read the full interview below:

How is the recording for The Signature coming along?
It's amazing how many songs I have recorded. It's almost a battle for the single, I got four hot singles and I'm doing videos for many of these songs. The videos are coming before the official MP3 release. I have more songs the people have not even heard, "Thuggatron" has been out for months, but I have hot songs for the ladies. Each woman I sent those female songs to, they loved.

The Signature album is going to be my classic. Nearly every song on the album will have a video for it. The album is ready to go, but I am waiting on the release because I want everything to be perfect. It is not just about releasing another album, I want The Signature to be that album from me.

Tell us a little more about "Get That Money."
"Get That Money" is an inspirational song. With the economy down, I wanted to lift the spirit of everyone, giving that positive light. This song is for everyone from the hustlers, the people who work the regular 9 to 5, and the corporate guys. Even down to the people who do different things for money, this is A-Thug telling them to "Get That Money."

People love the hook for the song and people absolutely loved the overall theme. Hopefully, I will leak the song to a few websites in a few days.

Do major guest appearances on this album, or is it all you?
No, it's not all me, but we do not have any collaborations yet. However, I have a collaboration with G. Dep that may end up on the album. For the most part, The Signature will be kept in-house. I am really conflicted about using the G. Dep collaboration for this album. But, this album will feature the same BRS team with newer and hotter and lyrics.

So before the end of this week, you will release the Thug Love mixtape...
Yeah, the Thug Love mixtape is coming on Friday, along with Ronnie J'uz' Stone Age Cash mixtape.

Do you think Thug Love will help bolster the sales of The Signature?
Of course it will, the songs off this mixtape will show how well I record and prove to the insiders I have skills. The mixtape will have the industry insiders buzzing and looking for my next release, which will be the upcoming album, The Signature.

What media outlets will you be using to release your videos, will you be on MTV anytime soon?
No, I'm not quite on the MTV level yet, but my team is negotiating and we are working to get my videos shown on BET and VH1. Other than that, my videos can always be viewed through my connection with a few public access channels in the Tri State area. Aside from this, catch my videos here on Hip Hop Vibe.

Fans can interact with me and get exclusive updates from me, by emailing me at blackrollingstones@gmail.com. I will send them the links to download my Icon album for free and also my Shot Caller mixtape. Regardless of who I am working with, I am never to big to speak with anyone who wants to speak with me. I love my fans.

On your upcoming releases, will we see more of A-Thug the artist on your upcoming releases?
That's one you will have to wait and see. I got so many styles, my subject matter has gotten deeper, as I have grown as a person. There is so much I will display on these upcoming releases. I show my growth each time I touch the microphone, but when I release these upcoming albums, you will see the growth. Especially, when you hear The Signature.

Once The Signature comes out, you will see how much I have grown since my debut, Wish of a Rolling Stone, back in 2003.

How does it feel to get buzz outside of your Harlem base, people from many other states, and countries for that matter, are giving you props.
Man it definitely feels good, this is what social networking gives you. Facebook has given me international access and my music obviously has spoken for itself. I was able to connect with a model from Australia and I have even cross-promoted for people in other areas, which is what this is all about.

Tell us more about the products you are working with...
Right now, the primary product BRS is distributing is our own. However, we are more than willing to market other products for businesses, we are honest people and if the people who work with us remain honest, we can put things together.

What has been your most exciting moment while recording these new projects?
The most exciting moment has been the reaction from the people. I have done a couple of shows and when I looked back at the crowd and they were really into the music. On past projects, I have loved the way people praise the artwork of my products. But, seeing the traffic on my website, brsent.blogspot.com, and seeing people wearing the merchandise they have purchased.

The overall experience has been well, doing music videos and spending time with the models. Just having a good time, when things go the way they are supposed to, I have my most-exciting experience.

What other ways are you trying to advance your career?
Man, I keep on grinding, they say a slow grind is better than no grind. I am putting out positive energy and working hard. It is only a matter of time before someone in a higher place finds out about my music, or someone passes one of my albums off to a big name and we truly advance to the big time.

Do you feel as if you are "bringing New York back" with The Signature?
What I'm doing is for everyone. With this new record, I am putting Broadway on, officially. I claim that landmark, I am that landmark. This time around, I am opening this market. Westside, Broadway, Upton, The Heights, these are the neighborhoods I will be putting on. It's not just me, there are so many other talented artists. Many of the artists who end up on Megastar DVD are from this area.

With me being Latino, I feel as if I am putting my people on in the game. I am taking what I am doing and putting it out there for the entire world to see and I know they are going to love it.

What do you want to show the people?
Man, put "Broadway G" back up man. That video shows I am the underground king. After this, when people think of A-Thug and BRS, they will think of not just Harlem, they will think of Broadway.

Album Review: "Self Made, Vol. 1"

By Hardcore Critic
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Rick Ross sought to prove he could take over the rap game and he did just that. Following his 2010 onslaught, Ross sought to prove he could become a top hip hop executive. Expanding his Maybach Music label by over 100%, Rick Ross proved just that.

The results of his labor were all laid out on the Maybach Music compilation album, Self Made, Vol. 1. Because these artists were only assembled a few months ago, the chemistry is lacking a bit. But, the distinct styles of each artist is what helps make the album.

While the album is introducing the new artists, meaning Rick Ross should take a backseat, Ross almost sounded as if he "phoned in" his verses. Because the leader of the crew came off a bit uninterested, the album lacked the synch any album should have. Overall, Self Made, Vol. 1 is an interesting album and very entertaining.

Fans of Rick Ross should definitely check the album out.

Hip Hop Vibe's Rating: 5/10

Unlike J. Cole, Fiend had a history in the rap game. For years, Fiend was a member of No Limit Records. While representing the tank, Fiend became acquainted with Snoop Dogg. Through Snoop Dogg, he was introduced to Dr. Dre.

These connections still hold true, as Fiend addressed his current status with both Jay-Z and Dr. Dre. He said everything was ready to go regarding Roc Nation. But, his lawyer never drew up the paperwork, so the deal never went through.

While not going into great detail, Fiend revealed he has been invited to record with Dr. Dre on Detox.

If anyone knows anything about hip hop beef, it is Ja Rule, seeing how he still trades barbs with 50 Cent. Unlike his own feud, Ja Rule said he thinks Lil' Kim and Nicki Minaj can resolve their differences.

Soon, Rule was asked about the Murder Inc. group. Before his successful solo career, Ja Rule, DMX, and Jay-Z made up the group, Murder Inc. While never officially recording with each other, they did plenty of features.

Ja Rule said the group did not work out due to the egos of the established artists in the group.

Following a five year hiatus, Eminem returned to the game and sold well with Relapse. However, the critics felt Eminem would have been better off if he had remained in hiatus. Looking back on the album, Eminem agreed.

Eminem followed 2009's Relapse with Recovery and took the game by storm. The album posted two consecutive chart toppers and was met with strong reviews. Throughout the year, Eminem won several awards for the album.

This trend has continued into 2011, as Eminem tied Justin Beiber for the most awards at the Billboard Music Awards. However, despite winning six awards, Eminem was not present for the show.

Eminem won awards for 'Top Artist,' 'Top Male Artist,' 'Top Rap Artist,' 'Top Billboard Album' (Recovery), 'Top Rap Album,' 'Top Rap Song' ("Love The Way You Lie").

On his last album, Nelly found himself recreating some of his hits from years passed. He reunited with Kelly Rowland for a sequel to "Dilemma" called "Gone." The song was not met with the same critical and commercial reception.

Ja Rule to reunite with Ashanti for New Song

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Ten years ago, Ja Rule and Ashanti recorded "Always on Time," one of the biggest records of the last decade. The song was on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a number of weeks from January 2002 until June 2002. From that point forward, Ja Rule and Ashanti were the biggest hip hop/R&B tandem.

Following "Always on Time," Ja Rule and Ashanti recorded several other hits. In 2003, they followed with "Mesmerize," before being decimated by feuds. By 2004, things were back on track for Ja Rule. Alongside R. Kelly, he and Ashanti recorded another top five hit with "Wonderful." But, legal issues with Murder Inc. led to the end of everyone's career.

Ja Rule finally took matters into his own hands and landed his comeback. He has scored a minor hit with "Real Life Fantasy" and he is buidling his fanbase back. For years, he has promised to reunite with Ashanti. Lloyd brought Ja Rule and Ashanti out for one of his performances and allowed Rule to perform "Real Life Fantasy." Now, Rule has finally been able to reunite with Ashanti on one of his new tracks. Produced by Ja Rule, himself, the song "LOL" will feature Ashanti.

The only hard part for Ja Rule is deciding which album it will be on. Next month, Ja Rule plans to release two albums, Pain is Love 2 and The Renaissance Project on June 7, 2011. Ja Rule is having a hard time deciding which album to put "LOL" on.

Young Jeezy finally completes "Thug Motivation 103"

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Months after The Recession, Young Jeezy began recording another album for a 2009 release date. When 2009 arrived, he revealed the album would follow the Thug Motivation series of albums. Thug Motivation 103 was scheduled for a summer 2009 release.

The year of 2009 came and went without a Young Jeezy release. Instead of an album, or even a single, the only thing fans heard from Jeezy was a guest feature on Rihanna's hit single, "Hard." In the summer of 2010, Young Jeezy did release his "Lose My Mind" single.

Despite no album coming, the Plies-assisted single became a minor hit. Even as he released more singles, no solid release date for the album was scheduled. Def Jam released albums from several other artists, while they decided to have Young Jeezy re-work his album. Ever since the late winter of 2010, Young Jeezy has been re-working his new album.

Def Jam approved the revised Thug Motivation 103 and Young Jeezy was given a late July release date. It is now up to the label to begin promoting the release. Young Jeezy promised fans he would definitely make up for lost time with his new album and singles, this summer.

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Ever since her initial run with Slip-N-Slide Records, Trina has struggled to maintain hits. However, Trina did manage to release an album last year. At one point, she was the only female rapper releasing new material.

Last week, Trina turned heads when she posted "f*ck BET..." for the world to see on Twitter. When the nominees for the BET Awards female category, Trina's name was nowhere to be found. Because of this, she was very upset with the network.

Fellow female rappers, Diamond and Nicki Minaj have shown their support for Trina. They gave her assuring messages on Twitter. Trina has thanked them for their support and congratulated them on their own success.

Stephen Hill, the BET programming executive, recently responded to Trina's messages. He said the reason she was not nominated was because her video was not eligible for 2011. When Trina submitted her video, it was still in the 2010 period. The 2011 period began on April 1 and ends on March 30 of 2012. Trina released her video on March 12, 2011, which makes it a part of the 2010 period.

Nas thinks George W. Bush should offer More Support to President Obama

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Nasty Nas is not done airing out the GOP. After their negative reaction to Common being invited to the White House, Nas spoke out in defense. Nas ended up calling out Fox News, saying the conservative network was actually afraid of black people and the hip hop movement.

Throughout his first three years in office, President Obama has been fighting an uphill battle. While his innovative ideas are what got him elected, the resistance from Congress is what may cost him a chance at a second term. Things turned around for Obama when he captured terrorist, Osama Bin Laden.

During his time as president, Republican George W. Bush promised he would capture Bin Laden. When he ended his presidency, with all-time lows, Bush left with little to say to the public. In the years Obama has been president, the media has heard very little from the former president. Nas would like for all of this to change.

The Queens rapper feels America should be seeing more of George W. Bush. Nas said Bush should be standing right beside President Obama and talking to the people he was once "leading." It is almost like someone who got away with something and does not want to show his face now, according to Nas. He thinks Bush should come back to the spotlight, only for a little while, to address the Bin Laden situation, for the people.

Rick Ross talks Meek Mill and "Tupac Back"

By The Hip Hop Writer
Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer

Rick Ross has long-established himself as a hitmaker in the game over the past five years. After watching friends Jay-Z, Birdman, and Diddy build empires, Rick Ross decided to do the same. Out of nowhere, he built his Maybach Music imprint into a force.

In a matter of weeks, he doubled the Maybach Music roster, adding Wale, Meek Mill, and Pill. Upon signing the rappers, Ross put them all in the studio. Among the first hits they have is the new single, "Tupac Back."

The song pays homage to the late renowned rapper, Tupac Shakur. Rick Ross said they chose Tupac because not many current hip hop listeners probably do not know much about him. It has been fifteen years since he died and hip hop has moved on.

Rick Ross said he was surprised at his Twitter followers, many of which did not even know who Tupac was, asking him who Tupac was when the song was released. Raising awareness about the late Shakur is what the song has done. The new record has introduced Tupac to the younger generation, many of whom were born years after his death.
